Research Working Group "Center for Research on Non-Financial Reporting"
The purpose and objectives of the research group
The goal of the IRG is to form a center of research competencies in measurement, development of indicator systems for accounting and disclosure of non-financial capital of a company, including components of intellectual capital (human, client and organizational), natural (environmental) capital, social capital, assurance of disclosed information on non-financial capital and assessing their role in creating long-term growth in the company's value.
The operational tasks of the IRG are as follows:
- Research in the field:
- specifics of disclosure of non-financial information in the reporting of companies in various industries;
- analysis of the quality of non-financial reporting, including issues of materiality, the relatedness of information on non-financial capital and future financial results in integrated reporting, in reporting on ESG business development factors;
- the impact of disclosure of data in non-financial reporting on capital costs of companies, risks and investors' assessments of the potential for growth in the value of companies;
- the role of non-financial reporting in identifying and preventing financial fraud;
- specifics of non-financial reporting in the financial sector and its role in shaping long-term growth trends in the value of financial companies;
- identifying the determinants that determine the level of disclosure of information on environmental and corporate social responsibility in non-financial reporting of companies;
- an integrated ESG approach to non-financial reporting;
- the relationship between ESG ratings and the financial performance of companies;
- identifying ESG risks and ways to mitigate them.
- the role of non-financial information for the development of new “green” and “social” financing instruments;
- development of indicators for disclosure, assessment of the components of intellectual capital (human, client and organizational) for various sectors of the economy, taking into account country specifics;
- evaluating the effectiveness and verification of intellectual capital;
- identifying the determinants that determine the level of information disclosure in the non-financial reporting of companies;
- audit and assurance of non-financial reporting;
- Conducting a regular international scientific seminar "Measurements for non-financial reporting" with the involvement of leading Russian and foreign scientists.
- Conducting a series of webinars on the topic "Research on audit and assurance of non-financial reporting" with the involvement of international speakers and experts.
- Development of educational technologies in the field of teaching non-financial reporting and sustainable development based on joint research with leading schools in this area.
- Conducting a quarterly round table on non-financial reporting and sustainable development in financial institutions.
- Regular participation in conferences EIASM, EURAM, EFA and the World Intellectual Capital Initiative (WICI). Preparation of one of such conferences in the future based on the Higher School of Economics;
- Joint research activities with foreign and Russian organizations and associations, holding joint scientific events, combining efforts to attract external sources of funding for research projects.
- Creation of a working group to assess the quality of audit reports and develop recommendations to improve the quality of audit reports.
Strategic Objectives
- Development of international academic cooperation in the interdisciplinary field of intellectual capital research
- Creation in the Russian Federation of a national association based on the World Intellectual Capital Initiative (WICI), including representatives of the academic community, business associations and government authorities and aimed at developing measurement systems, indicators of intellectual capital, taking into account industry specifics and taking into account the size of the business, as well as disseminating information on the accumulation and growth of intellectual capital in Russian business.
Using the experience of such an international network, adapting it to the specifics of industries and forms of business and introducing into the practice of non-financial reporting a correct understanding of the role of intellectual capital for sustainable business development will allow:
- reduce the lag in understanding the role and content of non-financial reporting of public companies;
- make non-financial data on Russian companies comparable with international practice;
- improve analytics on growth drivers, sustainability of growth in the fundamental value of Russian companies in the interests of the regulator;
- develop a system for analyzing the potential financial instability of companies based on the accumulation of data on non-financial factors that can characterize the operational risks of companies;
- to create a system of predictive diagnostics of a new type, adequate to the requirements of the knowledge economy and the digital economy based on new technologies;
- to create a network of leading research centers in the field of non-financial reporting. The creation of such an academic community will allow for more effective development of innovative approaches to the implementation and dissemination of non-financial public reporting, as well as identify potential positive consequences and comment on emerging best practices. The creation of the network will bring together leading scientists in the field. The network will provide a space to connect academia with the practical industry.
- to ensure the development of audit practice in the field of certification of non-financial reports for interested users.
- Establishment of the National Intellectual Capital Day in Russia under the auspices of this association as a form of an annual international practical conference with presentations and dissemination of the results of applied developments.
- Creation of a joint educational, scientific and methodological center based on the HSE School of Finance, responsible for the implementation of the professional development and professional retraining program for persons involved in the preparation of non-financial reporting.
